Delivering Moto News Since Birth

The Failed Experiment Hosted By: Kyle Cowling

Welcome To Moto Mail

Happy Friday!

Today’s edition of Moto Mail will be a touch somber off the start as bid farewell to 3 crowd favorites; Adam Cianciarulo, Phil Nicoletti and Dean Wilson will be making the “Final” Supercross start this weekend. This one hits me, and us I presume, extra hard and right in the feels so we will take a trip down memory lane for a bit. We talk 250 East v. West Showdown; Can The Chef cook RJ? Will Deegan go for the Vialle’s jugular? Then we talk MXGP, how Prado will respond, Can Jonass back up his first ever MXGP win plus oh so much more. Oh yeah the other series, GNCC is charging up for the Powerline Park GNCC this weekend as well. Holy smokes!

But first! BREAKING NEWS!

ELI TOMAC OUT FOR SERIES FINALE + OPENING ROUNDS OF PRO MOTOCROSS! Yamaha dropped a bombshell with their latest Press Release stating Tomac would be undergoing surgery on the thumb that was injured last weekend in Denver during free practice.

"This is not the news I wanted to break to everyone, but at the Denver Supercross in free practice I crashed on my thumb, and it's resulted in a Bennett fracture and some torn ligaments that will require surgery to stabilize my thumb. This is a tough one to swallow, knowing that I'm going to miss the opening rounds of motocross, but I'm optimistic I will be able to race the later portion of the outdoor season and the SMX rounds.”

- Eli Tomac on season ending surgery.

It is quite possible that Denver was Tomac’s final supercross, ever. Which given the result would be a bummer to say the least. Sure Eli Potatomac and I have had our differences (like sweet and russet potatoes) but there is no denying he is one of the baddest dudes to ever throw his leg over a motorcycle. We will see get a glimpse of him for the last handful of Pro Motocross rounds but it is giving more of a farewell tour than a comeback to the series ala Carmichael 07’.

That now means J-Coops, Justin Cooper, is the sole 450 Star Racing rider for the foreseeable future. No pressure J-Coops, no pressure.

Cue “There Goes My Hero” | A Farewell To Some Cheeky Legends

Dean Wilson has done it all. Making the journey over from Scotland to Canada at a young age. Dean had a successful amateur career landing him a ride on the infamous Pro Circuit Kawi team ran by Mitch Payton. He would begin his pro career in Canada before making his eventual pro debut stateside.

While injuries may have plagued his potential, Dean still got it done on the track. From winning his 250 Pro Motocross title in 2011 to competing for race wins and podiums in the 450 class. Let us not forget the 2023 Australian Supercross title was also captured by Dean! Deano is always one to keep the mood light with his charisma and wildly outgoing personality. From the The Golden Era, Grandpa Earl, Vurb Originals and even a Vurb Platinum. Deano, We salute you!

Adam Cianciarulo will go down as one of the most prolific racers the sport has ever seen to never win a 450 Supercross. His amateur career is one of the most decorated with 11 Loretta Lynn’s titles to his name along with 6900 other amateur titles battling the likes of Cooper Webb, Dakota Alix, Justin Hill, Thomas Covington and Jordon Smith. While on that journey, AC92 has never been one to shy away from the camera, taking every moment possible with the media and fans alike. We even had the opportunity to Find Stew with him.

While AC’s first couple of years were marred by injuries, He captured 11x 250 Supercross wins, 7x 250 Motocross wins, 2x 450 Motocross wins. He was the 2019 Monster Energy Cup champion on his debut ride on the 250 and let us not forget the show he put on during the 2019 Pro Motocross Series resulting in the 250 Pro Motocross Title after the heartbreaking loss that went down in Las Vegas for the 250 West title.

We have bared witness to one of the best to ever do it.

Filthy Phil Nicoletti is finally going to call it quits at the ripe age of 36. I guess he is getting tired of getting beat by 17 year old’s! Ok, in all seriousness; I thought we seen the last of Phil when he went cartwheeling through the rhythm lane in Atlanta. The stubborn New Yorker was better than that, and one could say he has had some of brightest flashes of brilliance since then. Leading SMX races over his ol friend Cooper Webb. He would find success throughout his career with several Top 5 finishes in the 450 class as well as a podium in 2018 at his home race of Unadilla.

The final 250 East v. West Showdown (rip Shootout) of the year is upon us. Levi Kitchen and RJ Hampshire are FREAKING TIED IN POINTS! Chef Levi has bounced back as well as one could ask since the crash in Nashville but we how the immense amount of heart RJ Hampshire carries in his riding. Will Levi’s buttery smooth riding style hold up to RJ’s WTFO mentality. It has thus far but now we have to mix in the best riders on the East Coast and either of these 2 could grab a start or start 10th so that should be interesting.

We are in for quite a treat. Not only do we have the aforementioned battle, we also have Haiden Deegan doing anything he can to gain 15 points on the frenchman Tom Vialle. Will it get dirty? Tbh, i’m unsure as 15 points is a lot. For perspective that is the difference between 1st place (25 points) and 12th place (10 points).

Sure, Deegan has it in him and it is for a supercross title with hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line. But lets not forget that Vialle is a 2x MX2 World Champion in Europe prior to coming stateside. He knows the pressure cooker that is a championship battle to the last race where Deegan, not so much. Like I said, we are in for a delight of a 250 E/W Race.

THE FAILED EXPERIMENT is a weekly podcast hosted by Southern California based DP/cinematographer, Kyle Cowling, along with a guest.

Each week, in his dining room, Kyle sits down with filmmakers, photographers, musicians, artists, athletes, and individuals from all walks of life to discuss everything from their journey of how they got to where they are today, their goals, accomplishments, failures, mental health, work/life balance and more.

Episode of the week | David Pingree | Whisky Throttle Show

David Pingree is a former professional athlete, racing Supercross and motocross from 1993 to 2003. Pingree rode for Splitfire/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki, Primal Impulse Suzuki, factory Red Bull/KTM, and MotoWorld Suzuki before transitioning into the editorial life for Racer X Magazine.

A multi-time Supercross race winner, Pingree was a title threat throughout a majority of his career. Most notably, the 2000 125 West Coast Championship, where he fell two points shy of the championship to Shae Bentley.

In this episode, we dive into aforementioned 2000 SX season, and Pingree recalls the race that truly cost him the championship (probably not the round you think it would be), his transition out of racing and into the editorial world, joining the fire service, starting the Whiskey Throttle Show podcast,  the  struggles of running a media site in a world dominated by social media, and much more.

With the disaster of a race Jorge Prado had in Portugal, He looks to bounce back and reclaim the red plate from Tim Gajser. But as this past weekend showed there are more names to toss into the mix than just Prado v. Gajser v. Herlings, Pauls Jonass captured his first MXGP class win in the muds of Portugal and will be riding that momentum back into spain. Latvia is known for 2 things, producing insane BMX talent (Maris Stombergs) and Pauls Jonaas.

Meanwhile in MX2, The flying Dutchman Kay De Wolfe can take a sign of relief as Simon Lagenfelder broke his collarbone and will be 69% at best during this stretch of GP’s coming up. Liam Everts looks to back up his 1-1 performance last weekend, and Lucas Coenen continues to seek his stride in 2024.

To be transparent. I don’t know much about what is going on in the series other than what I see on Cody Groves IG as he plays pit crew for Stew Baylor and all of the gents down at The Shoals.

Jonathan Girrior and Stew Baylor both have 2 wins to their names this season with only 10 points separating the 2 heading into the weekend. Girroir has been more consistent and on the podium every race while Stew dropped some 4ths at round 3 + 4 causing the points differential.

We can’t talk wins without mentioning the other 2 hitters Josh Toth and Dante Olivera as they each have claimed 1 win but really have raced many other races outside of that. I guess they cashed that bonus check and hit the beach for the summer.

The job market is wild AF at the moment. From 4 month interview processes to landing “the final interview” only to be told they are no longer hiring for that role what so ever, multiple times. Things have to change within most of these companies but they are too stuck on what should be and not what actually is.

Truthfully, this exact scenario is why Moto Mail was built. We tired of the gatekeepers of the world deciding who gets in and who is stuck on the outside. I guess it is time to build our own little kingdom.
